Walt Whitacre – Gone Home

It is with great sadness that I let everyone know that Walt Whitacre passed away this morning. Walt has been a a great Scouter for many, many years in Madison County. He will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Dr. Whitacre was born in Detroit in 1931 and moved to Huntsville in 1964. A short time later, he became the first Scoutmaster of Troop 364 in Huntsville, Alabama. He would serve in that role for more than fifty years, where he would help dozens of young men attain the rank of Eagle Scout. In 2018, he received his 55-year veteran award from the Boy Scouts of America.

Dr. Whitacre’s dedicated his life to the principle of servant leadership. He received the Vigil Honor (1979) and Founder’s Award (1992) from Kaskanampo Lodge #310. He also received the Silver Beaver Award (1973) from the Tennessee Valley Council and the Silver Antelope Award (1986) from the Southern Region.

He served as Scoutmaster for Wood Badge courses SE-283 (1981), SE-337 (1983), SE-401 (1985), and SE-447 (1987).

In his professional life, Dr. Whitacre served Marshall Space Flight Center for nearly 40 years, followed by a decade of service as the Director of Academics for the Huntsville campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He was also a dedicated member of the United States Coast Guard Auxilliary for more than 30 years.

Dr. Whitacre’s legacy has left an indelible mark on Scouting in Huntsville and across the Southern Region. His absence will be felt by hundreds of Scouts who knew him as “Wonderful Walt Whitacre.”

Funeral services will be Monday, May 6 at Latham United Methodist Church in Huntsville. Visitation at 9:30 AM and his service will be at 11:00.
